How to build a Windows Server 2022 home lab and why

When you move to a different architecture, you need different drivers. And those are not available for download and installing them on the commercial appliances would void their ability to be supported. Depending on your budget and what you want in your homelab, you can use a repurposed desktop, or get something as small as a Raspberry Pi to a rack server.

There are many different versions of Linux, so it’s important to choose the one that best suits your needs. Also, many cyber security students use a home lab server to practice their hacking skills on test systems. You can run various versions of Microsoft Windows or distributions of Linux as your host of guest OS. Broader Coverage Two multi-directional and high-performance antennas with a magnetized base extends your existing Wi-Fi reception capabilities. Place the magnetized antenna base anywhere on your desktop to find the optimal location for signal reception. A good power supply should also be included so that everything runs properly and you don’t have to worry about any power issues.

As you work in your home lab, you might find that you are constantly setting up new Windows Server virtual machines. While you can set these VMs manually, there is an easier way such as the Hydration Kit for Windows Server 2022. This is a GitHub project with a repository that provides an automated way to produce a lab environment based on Windows Server. I have maintained a lab in my home since the mid-1990s and have found that high-end gaming PCs make an especially good alternative to pricey server hardware. Gaming PCs are typically equipped with fast CPUs and lots of memory, making them ideal to run several virtual machines at a time.

The only real benefit here is that you can continue to use your keys if you choose not to renew each year. Of course, if you like to be bleeding edge, this will probably not work too well after the first 6 months into your next year when someone new comes out that you don’t have. You can find the full Microsoft comparison here and I’ve uploaded a current software matrix here. Emby Media Server – Anyone that has kids realizes those flimsy blu-ray drives aren’t going to last long. It’s great to store and host movies, home videos, pictures, and audio.

For me, I have some 6TB SATA III drives in a HP Z800 workstation and I offer them out via SAMBA and NFS to my various machines. In a second location, I have a couple of HP Envy 700 desktops with those same drives offering the disk out via the same protocols. I personally see NO REASON to duplicate my disks for content that’s easy to replace when the disks are rated for 1,000,000 MTBF (that’s 114 years of use before they fail, on average). Most of my content is media files and I have those duplicated to a whole new server in a secondary location – so, recovery is easy). One feature I like about these is they have IPMI/KVM over IP so you never need to hook up a monitor or mouse.

I’m less familiar with Nakivo, but I wanted to mention another option for backup. My understanding is that Nakivo does not use the API, which allows it to work with the free version of ESXi. This is a great benefit for those that doesn’t want to set up a custom solution with lots of moving pieces. Dynamic DNS Service – Chances are your ISP gives you a dynamic IP. You can keep DNS updated with your current IP so that you can access your VPN and servers remotely by hostname.

Best Budget Homelab Server For 2020

A home lab gives you the opportunity to work with services that you might never use, thereby helping to increase your skill level. For example, you might use a home lab to experiment with an advanced network configuration, Active Directory, disaster recovery, or just about anything else you might want to try. Windows Server 2022 upgraded its storage features, so you can test Server Message Block compression to see how well it performs in your testing. Home labs are a time-honored tradition among IT professionals.

But let’s look at the pros and cons of enterprise vs consumer grade equipment and why I personally recommend enterprise grade equipment. Specifically, used enterprise grade equipment that we can fix it up to our liking. After all, we are in a very technical field and we should know the basic hardware components of building a computer system.

However, most system administrators must be able to manage virtual machines using a hypervisor to control and manage one or more virtual machines. Modern hypervisors like vSphere ESXi typically run on 64-bit systems. Therefore, except for microcontrollers, 64-bit hardware is the new normal. This architecture offers RAM capacities of 8GB (and up 1TB of RAM isn’t unusual in corporate IT environments), and disk capacities of many terabytes. In 2020’s big data environments, it’s not uncommon to find a petabyte of disk space in a datacenter, which is an amount of storage that was once thought to be impossible in practice.

Many IT pros build home labs from old PCs or even from outdated servers that they were able to get at a good price. One legitimate claim to fame for Linux is that we can put ancient 32-bit hardware back on the job, often for a single purpose or multiple small tasks. I myself have a small, 32-bit set-top computer that I continue to use for a single purpose application that must run on hardware and will never be upgraded to run on a virtual machine. When an operating system is available, a 32-bit system still works fine for single functions, web displays, or low-power, always-on requirements.

Which cloud software best suits your needs/wants?

VMware provides a sophisticated public-facing website for checking compatibility with your hardware. At my place of employment, there are dozens of these small systems in use for engineering functions that connect to the network via wired Ethernet ports. My employer uses them extensively for testing products. The Intel- and AMD-compatible Complex Instruction Set CPU processors are always available. Also, with the widespread use and acceptance of the ARM processor, we also have a low-power, low-cost option for building systems at home or work. Here at the dawn of the new decade , almost everyone owns and uses a computer—especially if you count smartphones as computers .

However, it’s not uncommon for spinning disk drives to fail after a power outage. This happens because when the platters stop spinning, the drive cools down below its nominal operating temperature. These two changes can generate enough stiction to prevent the drives from spinning and starting back up again after a power outage. (Yes, stiction really is a thing.) The good thing is that solid-state data storage devices, or SSDs, don’t have motors or spinning platters. SSDs are fantastic devices to use for a low-power system. You just have to provide software maintenance for the number of times you read and write to the drive.

And as with any benefit, it introduces new challenges. Since packets are only written to the proper destination port, you need a managed switch in order to be able to create traffic mirroring for packet monitors. Networking – While you do have some virtualized network functions within VMware and similar hosts, they really aren’t “switches” in the sense of being extendable to any device. In other words, they only work for the guests that are running on the host and connectivity to a physical switch is necessary to get the traffic off-host. Virtualization – If you have a fairly powerful machine that lives a lot of its life in an “idle” state, you should definitely create a virtualization Host out of it.

A new Windows Server release is one good reason to produce a home lab to learn at your own speed. Hi, at least two of our domain server certs expired today-the IIS cert for the vpn and NPS server cert. We have an internal CAI tried creating a domain cert request, but it didn't show any CA server to select. And as Richard has indicated, it's not up to 2 years but up to 18 months for eval license with rearms.

This is a bit of a bummer if you are looking for a catch-all for your homelab and productivity software. Once the host is created, you install “Guests” of other machines and they can share the underlying resources. I have Windows 10 desktops, openSUSE workstations , and some network appliances all running across my two machine virtualization farm.

If you would like to see a great list of things people use in their homelabs, I would suggest checking out the software page of the /r/homelab wiki here. Wireless AP’s – These are generally not necessary. Most homes are laid out in such a way that a single wireless router , centrally located, can provide coverage throughout.
